CHANGING TRADITIONS..??

Have a job, a wife and children. Do the outside work, come home, eat your meal and watch TV. Your wife can deal with the children anyway. You are really tired, you have to wake up early in the next morning. Take off your socks and go to bed. This picture has been changing in society thanks to the women's efforts. Women have proved that they can be strong, hadrworking and smart as men. There are, however, still rules in the society that are in deep deep minds of people and cannot be changed- or still need time to change. Maybe it is beacuse, men and women are different in some ways.

Every woman has to do every work. she has to tidy and clean rooms, wash dishes or clothes-even it is done by machines, she puts them into the machines- has to do ironing, prepare the clothes of her children and husband, host the guests, listen to problems and find solutions, remember special days and organize them, call her family and her husband's family in special days etc etc..Beside al of them, she has to be succesful in her job! However, men don't have to know all of them, because, there is already a person at home who knows everything.

Every woman is a doctor or a nurse when somebody is ill in home. She has to deal with him/ her. Even when her husband is ill, she does the first intervention, then she calls an ambulance- if it is needed. Men,on the other side, calls an ambulance immediately- or he never minds it.

Every women- working or not- is the guardian of children at home, in school, in courses. She is responsible for the education of children. Homework is given for mothers to be done, national fests are for mothers to be gone. School meetings are for mothers to be joined. There are few men who do them.

As a conclusion, there are still unchanged things in life. I think, some of them will never change, because of different natures of women and men. However " let the leader stop being leader"

What is second life?

This play was set up by Linden Lab in 2003. It is a virtual world which is always renewed by its users all the time and which is getting bigger and bigger. Although it has not so fame in Turkey, it is the single life simulation which is affecting the whole world.

In this imitation world, you can do whatever you want; just think and go through with it. Most people, however, goes into this life for the things that they cannot do in real life, to introduce new products -for companies- and to have new friends from all over the world. There are also people who play sl for recovering from their illness to a certain point.

Human always try to satisfy themselves through different ways. Second life is a big choice for them. They can do shopping, flirting, marry and divorce, buy and sell land or can make designs of clothing, architecture. Also, you can market them and earn money in real life. You can buy a flying carpet and fly wherever you want. You can buy a body for you and can shape yourself in what way you wish. You can make classes, have online students. You can pray, relax, have a job and earn money. You can have a girl or boy friend in second life- but be careful, there are people who break up their wives or husbands for second life flirts!! In short, if there is a thing that you want to do in real life, you can do it in second life as well.

There are a lot of famous companies who have islands in second life. For example you can go to Adidas Island and look for new shoes, maybe you can buy one of them. This play is a mean of advertisement for a lot of people. They can make you stay in a film and give you money while making you have knowledge about them. Some people make exibition of their pictures in second life. So to say, this is a place where people make advertisement and get purchasers' view on their products.

The other thing is that, this play is a easy way for people to meet and have new friends. They make groups, contact with each other and talk about their interests. You can have a friend from the other part of the world and can get marry:) There are even ill children- such as autistic ones- who meet in second life and talk about their problems and get relax. Or, paralysed people can live their second life in this play, this makes them bound to life.

I see it needless to say technology is developed and important in this world. This play is one of its miracles. Only you have to do is to get account and set up this play, then you can start to play it. Good luck in your second life.

I ACT AND LEARN

“I hear and forget, see and remember, act and learn.”
( a Chinese proverb)

Making learning permanent and quick is one of the basic problems for which pedagogues have been trying to find solutions. Since Archaic times, philosophers have introduced their opinions and all these solutions are still taken into consideration with their time and social structure. However, these principles can be affective only when they come together, because they are all indispensable parts of this system.

We know that, the more sense organs are in learning process, the more efficiency is. In modern teaching, “clearness” is a principle that suggest making most sense organ effective in this process, because people remember from:
1.reading = %10
2.listening = %20
3.seeing = %30
4.both seeing and listening = %50
5.telling = %70
6.acting and telling = % 90

Computers are means in learning effective and there are differences between technological classes and pen-paper classes. In such a case, I would prefer the first class although it has some disadvantages.

Using computers help both students and teachers get data faster and save time. Its speed is of course over human speed. You have access to internet, you can find whatever you want in seconds. You can archieve datas, save them in CDs. When you are in a pen-paper class, however, you have to make research from encyclopedias or books which are available on internet already. This make you effort on searching more.

Computer labs help all the students be active in the class, because all the students have to answer the questions that are in the computers. In a pen- paper class, the question that is asked by the teacher is answered by some of the students- in general they are the volunters, and the same people. This shows the others more shy or passive. Especially in group works, mocking or humiliating are less in labs, because students don't have to deal with each other. Also, computers are lifeless things, they can't understand that you are red like a tomato because you don't know.

Visuality is very important in learning, because people can't forget what they see easily. When those things are colorful, with animation, this makes lessons more enjoyable and remindful. Nobody wants to see a teacher who is colorless(!) and who is always talking in a same intonation. You can sit on a chair and sleep during the class.

Beside all the advantages of labs, there are some disadvantages- advantages of pen-paper class. For example, this excessive usage of technology makes it very less that the social interaction between students. They may speak less than they do in a pen-paper class. Namely, pen-paper class is friendlier, warmer. Teachers talk to students face to face, can look into their eyes; however, in labs, we generally look into computers' monitors.

Using only computers and shelving other methods both lower the efficiency and may make students addictive to computers. This- because of radiation and excessive light from the computers- results in eyestrain and headaches.

As a result, both the classrooms have some advantages and disadvantages. Some students are good at remembering visual things, while some of them can understand through writing and taking notes. For a developed country, an education without memorization; however, technology is a touchstone.

ENJOY IT..

As most of my friends know, I don't like my department so much. I am getting used to it; however, being able to change three things would be really great for me. I would start with some of the lessons, then change the alternatives that we have (!) and for the last, I would make some changes about buildings.

In this department, there are some courses that I think we are taking vainly. If we think that we are going to be teachers, these courses are very detailed and will not help us in our daily or business lives. I want to give literature courses for an example. I don't know even my own literature history so detailed. Why don't we just take them superficially? Some of us may think that these courses expand our knowledge about English culture, but, if I want to know a lot of things about the country, I can do that on my own. Maybe, I am just against to be obliged to take them.

The second thing is our chances- in fact we don't have any chances. In other departments, if you are not happy with your department and have a good grade, you can change your department. For example, a student in civil engineering can transfer to our department or any other departments. This is not acceptable for us. The other thing is double major program. In METU all the departments have possibility to make double major program. We can only make minor program. I would let us make double major program or transfer to other departments.

For the last but not the least, if I had the chance, I would make our buildings more modern. I would rebuild them, I would plant a lot of trees and make everywhere green. Now, we just see yellowness around us.

I wish, I really had that chance to make them real. In that case, I could enjoy this university fully.

ME

We, people, all have dark sides that are sometimes can not be seen by others. In fact nobody really knows us. We have some good or bad traits that create our different sides from other people, make us unique. Here, there are three of my personal characteristics: I don't like cats and dogs, I am afraid of being in dark and closed places, I am very sensitive.

My fear of dogs is coming from this: When I was a child, a dog chased me and my sister. Ever since, whenever I see a dog no matter how small it is, I begin to make escape plans. They look as if monsters and ready to attack to me. I don't see cats as monsters,but they just turn my stomach. In fact, I used to like cats- not cats but kittens. After coming this university, this feeling has really changed. There are big big cats in this campus, they are like pumas. They come and sit near you, whatever you say they don't go anywhere, they even dare to come to your room! Their fur is making me get goose bumps. How can some people live and sleep with them? I can't stand with that idea. Now I like them only in photos, they are lovelier in them.

I think everbody, when they are little, is afraid of dark. This fear, however, has began to incease lately. I know one of its reason: Saadettin Teksoy and his programs with cemetery or about ghosts that I watched while I was a child. I am really afraid of being in dark places now. Also, if that place doesn't have an open door, being there will absolutely be like a nightmare for me. If I am in a dark place, I immediately turn on the lights. I can't stay in a closed room for a long time. I begin to sing or wear my headphone, listen music. I realised that I was getting distressed in those places last summer. Also, when I am sleeping, there should be light even it is very poor. Otherwise, I can't sleep.

My last trait is that: I am very sensitive, and this is what I dislike most about me. I always consider about what people say, what they mean. Even if they say a thing unconsciously, I burden a lot of means to it. I can cry for a little, odd thing. As most women, I eat and eat in those times. Especially chocolate and tea are my sedatives. Thanks God, I don't gain weight.

These are just a little of me of course:) Some of my friends already know them, some don't. I am glad to tell myself for a little.

New term..

Hi everybody! We are together again in Sedat Hoca's section :) There are also new friends some of whom are not happy with these electronic devices. I want to say a thing for them: do not worry, you will get used to it soon:)
I want to tell about myself. I am from Yozgat. after graduating from my primary school, I went to Erdogan Akdag Anatolian Teacher Training High School. I stayed in dormitory for four years, and had a lot of friends there. I still miss the wonderful friendships in that dormitory. Two years passed and I chose my department -my life's mistake. I was very happy then, because I was doing well in exams, I was enjoying English lessons. Everything was good until I recognised that in fact I don't like this department, there is nothing for me in here. Of course it was very late, I won OSS and came here. Thanks God, I am in a very good university now, and it is my only solace:(
However, I got used to being here, met new people, found opportunities to make the things that I had wished real. That's, I am happy now, except for my department..
I don't have plans about my future for now, I hope I won't have to be a teacher. This doesn't mean that I don't like teaching job, but it is just about me. I can't teach, namely, this job is not for me. What a pity for me:( When people ask me ' In which university are you a student?' I say : ' I am in METU' and they replie ' Woww, in which department?' and I say : ' English teaching' . Do you know the rest part of the story? They just hem and haw.. This is what I hate most. I wish I were in other departments- that doesn't matter so much- but in this university. This is late for me to complain about all the things I have faced, I just wanted to unburden myself via this blog.
Forget about them, let's carpe diem:) I like this section, because it doesn't have midterm or final exams, at least, you can take AA as long as you do your homework regularly. I am very curious about tapped-in and second life places for the lesson.
I am finishing, I wish all my friends, all my teachers a good term, full of happines and success- not success but love:)) I am just kidding of course:P see you next week..
